Islamic TeacherThe Importance of the Six Kalmas in Islam: A Fundamental Teaching in Our Academy
At our academy, we take great pride in teaching the Six Kalmas of Islam to our students. These Kalmas hold immense significance in a Muslim’s faith and daily life. They serve as a foundation for understanding Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), Risalat (Prophethood), and Imaan (Faith). By learning and memorizing these Kalmas, students strengthen their belief and spiritual connection with Allah.
What Are the Six Kalmas?
The Six Kalmas are fundamental declarations in Islam that every Muslim should learn and recite. Each Kalma carries deep meanings that reflect the core beliefs of Islam.
1. First Kalma (Kalma Tayyibah – The Pure Word)
“Laa ilaaha illallah, Muhammadur Rasoolullah.”
(There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah.)
This Kalma is the essence of Islam, affirming the belief in the oneness of Allah and the Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH).
2. Second Kalma (Kalma Shahadat – The Declaration of Faith)
“Ashhadu an laa ilaaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhoo wa Rasooluhu.”
(I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (PBUH) is His servant and Messenger.)
This Kalma emphasizes bearing witness to faith, which is essential for becoming a Muslim.
3. Third Kalma (Kalma Tamjeed – The Word of Glorification)
“Subhan-Allahi, wal-hamdu-lillahi, wa laa ilaaha illallahu, wallahu Akbar. Wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa billahil-aliyyil-azeem.”
(Glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, there is no God but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Great.)
This Kalma teaches us to glorify and praise Allah in all aspects of life.
4. Fourth Kalma (Kalma Tawheed – The Word of Unity)
“Laa ilaaha illallahu, wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyi wa yumeetu, wa huwa hayyun la yamootu, biyadihil-khairu, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer.”
(There is no God but Allah, He is One, and has no partner. His is the kingdom, and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is alive forever. In His hand is all good, and He has power over everything.)
This Kalma strengthens our belief in Allah’s absolute power and control over the universe.
5. Fifth Kalma (Kalma Astaghfar – The Word of Seeking Forgiveness)
“Astaghfirullaha Rabbi min kulli dhambin wa atubu ilayh.”
(I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for every sin I have committed, and I turn to Him in repentance.)
Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) is a vital practice in Islam, helping believers purify their hearts and ask Allah for mercy.
6. Sixth Kalma (Kalma Radde Kufr – The Word of Rejecting Disbelief)
“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min an ushrika bika shay’an wa ana a’lamu bihi, wa astaghfiruka lima la a’lamu bihi. Tubtu anhu wa tabarratu min al-kufri wash-shirki wal-kidhbi wal-bid’ati wan-namimati wal-fawahishi wal-buhtani wal-ma’asi kulliha, wa aslamtu wa aqoolu laa ilaaha illallah, Muhammadan Rasoolullah.”
(O Allah! I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which I do not know. I repent from it and declare myself free from disbelief, polytheism, lying, innovation, backbiting, indecency, slander, and all sins. I submit to You and affirm that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad (PBUH) is the Messenger of Allah.)
This Kalma is a declaration of faith and rejection of all false beliefs.
